OFFSITE turned out to be the ideal platform for us to deploy mirror servers. We have a proprietary order management system that is
responsible for nearly $200 Million in new issue debt each week.
The criticality of this one system was the major driver to create an offsite facility that was ready to take over production on a
moments notice. Using standard features within Microsoft's SQL Server database, each transaction is replicated real-time from servers in
Chicago's Loop out to the Kenosha-based facility 90-minutes away.
Another way in which we've used this facility is for online backups. Company employees can now log into our intranet and find their user documents from the prior evenings backups. All files that are modified in a given day are copied that evening to a file server we have in our OFFSITE co-location suite. Users are then able - via self-service - retrieve documents they mistakenly deleted.
At this point, the OFFSITE co-location suite is part of our normal operations. and the platform on which we've developed our business continuity plan.

Our business had a need for near real-time backups of our windows File Server files. We placed a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device in our Business Continuity Cabinet at OFFSITE. Through a VPN connection to our on-site data center we mirror our files hourly using Microsoft's File Replication Service (FRS), a no cost file mirroring protocol that comes standard with Windows 2000/2003 server.
We still make nightly backup tapes, but having a Mirror of our File Server at OFFSITE allows us the following benefits:
- We have a secure hourly backup of our files off premises, with little to no maintenance and/or supervision.
- We provide the ability for our users to self-restore lost or damaged Windows files by giving them access to their files over the VPN connection to OFFSITE.
- We have the ability to hot-swap our file server from our primary one on-site, to our secondary one at OFFSITE.
